Argentina ratifies the 1996 Child Protection Convention

Today, 18 September 2025, the Argentine Republic deposited its instrument of ratification of the Convention of 19 October 1996 on Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Recognition, Enforcement and Co-operation in respect of Parental Responsibility and Measures for the Protection of Children (1996 Child Protection Convention).
At the ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, depositary of the HCCH Conventions, Argentina was represented by Mr Diego Emilio Sadofschi, Chargé d’Affaires, and Ms María Soledad Bellavigna, Counsellor, both from the Embassy of Argentina to the Netherlands.
The depositary was represented by Mr Jules van Eijndhoven, Head of the Treaties Division, Mr Rieks Boekholt, Senior Legal Officer at the Treaties Division, and Ms Yara Boff Tonella, Desk Officer at the Western Hemisphere Department, while the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH was represented by Dr Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary General, and Ms Laura Martínez-Mora, First Secretary (Diplomat Lawyer) and co-Head of the International Family and Child Protection Law Division.
With the accession of Argentina, the Convention now has 58 Contracting Parties. It will enter into force for Argentina on 1 January 2026. More information on this Convention is available on the Child Protection Section of the HCCH website.
Argentina has been a Member of the HCCH since 1972 and is now a Contracting Party to eight HCCH Conventions.
