Algeria accedes to the 1961 Apostille Convention

Today, 5 November 2025, the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (1961 Apostille Convention).

At the ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, depositary of the HCCH Conventions, Algeria was represented by H.E. Ms Salima Abdelhak, Ambassador to the Netherlands, Ms Amina Bokreta, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Algeria, and Mr Mezeghiche Walid, Attaché of Foreign Affairs at the Embassy of Algeria. The depositary was represented by Mr Jules van Eijndhoven, Head of the Treaties Division, Mr Stephan Hessels and Ms Margot Huizing, Legal Officers at the Treaties Division, and Ms Maaike Wierema, Policy Officer at the North Africa and Middle East Department, while the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH was represented by Dr Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary General, and Mr Caio Gomes de Freitas, Legal Officer.

With the accession of Algeria, the 1961 Apostille Convention now has 128 Contracting Parties. It will enter into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026. More information on this Convention is available on the Apostille Section of the HCCH website.

Algeria is not yet a Member of the HCCH and the 1961 Apostille Convention is the first HCCH Convention or instrument that it has joined, making it the 159th Party connected to the work of the HCCH.
